| THE BEST WAY TO CREATE BIG, BAD DOGS |

FOOD: Try to take food or toy away from him, and then act scared when he snaps at you. Never bother a dog while he is eating. The most common situation where a dog bite occurs is while a dog is eating.
TUG: Playing "tug of war" with a dog and let him decide when tostart, when to stop and who gets the toy. Many dogs interpret this as aggression. If they "win," they feel empowered. If they feel threatened, they may try to retaliate.
SURPRISE:Surprising" a dog. (sneaking up on him or startling him while he is sleeping). Often, the dog's defense mechanism will kick in, and he will bite in self-defense.
WRESTLING: Rough housing" with or other sudden movements toward the dog's owner. Many dogs will see this as an attack on his owner, and will attack you to defend the owner.
IGNORE: Ignoring their warning! If a dogs barks ferociously or growls when you approach his territory, bed, etc. and you continue, that is an engraved invitation to get bitten. They are warning you that they don't like that and stop. Listen!
TEASING: Inappropriate touching. Dogs generally don't like their ears, tail and feet tugged. Some don't like being inverted and rubbed on their belly. This is a position of submission and an aggressive dog will resist this "challenge" vigorously.
| THE
BEGININGS OF BAD DOG TRAINING PROBLEMS |

A dog or puppy with the following habits or traits
(see the list below) is on the road to dominace aggression with people. This type of dog will bite babies, toddlers, teen-ages
and adults who attempt to control this dog.
Remember, dogs NEVER grow out of bad behavior. They
will always grow into bad behavior, and as your dog gets bigger, stronger and
more difficult to control, the aggressive behavior will become more common,
more violent and more people will get hurt.
Please ask yourself this question, "How many stiches
to a baby's face will it take for YOU to take responsibility for YOUR DOG'S
aggression problem?
How many stiches are too many?"

Dear Ms Moore: Thank you so
much for your time and sage advice earlier today. As you could probably glean
from the tenor of my questions and the direction of our discussion, I was
extremely concerned about Ty, my 87-pound shepherd/lab. His increasingly
aggressive behavior exhibited toward both my girlfriend and me -- the alpha-dog
of the pack, or so I thought - was alarming.
Immediately after our call
I took your advice and ordered the Dondi-style muzzle and began his
"resocialization process". He spent the balance of the afternoon in his crate
and I retrieved my copy of The Art of Raising a Puppy, as you recommended, from
the party to whom I had loaned it some months ago.
In any case with your
encouragement I am not only emboldened but also actually looking forward to
commencing training with him once again. I must tell you that I was afraid that
I might be compelled to etherize him; a step which, needless to say, I did not
want to take. I now have every confidence that he will be a model student at
"Doggy U" here on the campus of the R. R.
Also, as soon as I hung up
the phone with you I telephoned J. (my significant other) and excitedly
explained all you had told me. Although a bit leery initially, upon further
consideration, your ideas make so much sense on an intuitive level for anyone
with even a modicum of basic behavioral psychology, that she indicated a
willingness to give it a try.
Thank you so much. I'll send you a picture
of Ty in his cap and gown in 30 to 45 days. All the best, K. M. and Ty
